0208 Margot Page - Enamelling on Steel
WEBSITE - Email

Margot has been producing enamelled art pieces for over 25 years. Her material of choice is bandsaw-cut sheet steel rather than the more commonly used sheet copper. Margot started out as a fashion illustrator and has continued as an illustrator in the enamelling medium. Her designs are one of a kind, mostly custom orders of birds, wildlife, flowers and exotica, all mounted onto beautiful glass vases and plates: many subjects gleaned from sailing voyages on the world's great oceans. After sailing from Japan, she and her partner have set up workshops in the Cowichan Valley of British Columbia, Canada.

Margot has headed up the Artisans' Cooperative, IMAGINE THAT! in downtown Duncan, BC since 2001. There she shows her work alongside 85 other top artisans from Vancouver Island. Her Studio in North Cowichan is open to interested visitors. Please call ahead.

HINAS BELLY BOWL by Ann-Rosemary Conway, BFA

Halawa Valley lies on Moloka'i, one of the Hawai'ian Islands. This exquisite site is so sacred that the people of Moloka'i do not wish visitors to enter as they have erected many ceremonial platforms there. They also believe that Goddess Hina is the Island. As you can see I do too. Picture

0204 Earl Enterprises
Email

A new Victoria venture in custom art takes flight. In this modern hurry-up world of Polaroid pictures and one-hour labs, it is truly a breath of fresh air to meet an artist like Glenn Earl. Technique and natural talent enable him to capture not just the superficial, two-dimensional perspective of a photograph but also the deeper hues, subtleties and character of his subjects. He has spent 35 years studying, working and teaching the exploration of pastels/suede board as a medium for art. He now lives in Victoria, where with his new venture Pastel Pet Portraits,he specializes in creating full-color 16X20 portraits from your photographs. Those who have already had the opportunity for Mr. Earl to render a pastel portrait of a cherished one, animal or human, appreciate the warmth and attention to detail he delivers to his work. Born in Sussex, England, Glenn moved soon thereafter with his family to Calgary, Alberta. His early studies in the arts were under the tutelage of artist Roger Romanick where he received oil instruction. He continued his education at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Mount Royal College and the Alb... More information

Donna Webb - Artist Statement

I am a graduate of Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver. I use a variety of media - paint, collage, printmaking, and my own handmade paper - in my art practice. The theme apparent in nearly all of my work comes from my close affinity with the natural environment it is the setting and elements of nature that provide the structure and context for my work. This goes beyond the depiction of what I see in the natural world, and instead, reflects my own experiences of it and my remembered thoughts and feeling in relation to these experiences. My travels, dream imagerey, and relationships in my own and other cultures also inform my work. In the past my concern was primarily with representational imagerey but I have moved into abstraction as it seems to reflect more adequately my own deeply personal and emotional responses to my experiences. In this way, my work is evocative rather than descriptive.

THE ARTIST AS ORGANIC REVOLUTIONARY

by Dwayne Edward Rourke Skywalker Studio Cortes Island BC Canada

I first came to Cortes Island in 1991 as an invited participant in Hollyhock's Millenial conference titled: Bringing Magic To The Mainstream. Deeply moved by both what I experienced at Hollyhock, and by the quality of life I enjoyed here on the island, I imagined someday living on Cortes. Now, more than ten years later, and three years since first declaring my citizenship here, I can think of no place on Earth I would rather be than Cortes Island. And aware as I am, of the grievous atrocities wrought by this island's namesake, it occurs to me that there is nowhere on the planet more suitable than this, for the redemption of what his name has come to represent. Mass murder, torture, violence, rape, exploitation, genocide. These are but a few of the words used to describe the actions of Hernan Cortes and his cohorts as they plundered their way to glory in the first wave of what was to become a storm of vicious European colonial expansion into...
